I bought my 1975 Renault 12 in Melbourne, and started on a 16000km journey. After ~100km of driving, the engine died, and I had to get it fixed. Through friends I had made in Melbourne, I was able to locate a replacement engine in a wreck shop in Colac, Victoria. It took them 2 days to change the engine, and It ran the remaining kms of the trip on that engine.

Camping in Kakadu National Park, where you could pitch your tent in any clearing, so I did. Very basic, as in no services provided, but it made for excellent solitude, and a lot of rustle from the bush at night.

My tent has a story of its own. Handed down to me from a couple who used to do pro bono work in Arnhemland in the 70s. She was a teacher, he was a doctor, and they didn't need their tent anymore, so they gave it to me. I met them in Queensland, and stayed with them for a couple of days. Nice people.
